Japan

Ussuri Brown Bear
My quest to photograph all 8 species of bears took me to Japan, specifically to the island of Hokkaido. The Ussuri brown bear is one of the largest brown bears in the world, but what makes them so special is their beautiful orange tipped mane and large ears. We found them in the Shiretoko National Forest on the northern most point of the island of Hokkaido

Blakiston's Fish Owl
We also found one of the rarest owls in the world, the Blakiston's Fish owl. This owl is the largest living species of owl, which is a sub-species of the eagle-owl. These owl are endangered with only between 145-160 of them left in Japan. We were so excited to find this owlet in the Shiretoko National Forest.

While the trip to Japan was primarily for wildlife, the incredible landscapes and culture are beakoning me to return. This is such a beautiful country with so much more to explore.
